The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) is a global communion of Christian churches in the Lutheran tradition. Founded in 1947 in Lund, Sweden, the LWF now has 138 member churches in 77 countries representing 66 million of the nearly 70 million Lutherans worldwide. The LWF acts on behalf of its member churches in areas of common interest such as ecumenical relations, theology, humanitarian assistance, human rights, communication, and the various aspects of mission and development work. Its secretariat is located in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Lutheran World Federation's Department for World Service (LWF/DWS) is the internationally recognized humanitarian and development agency of LWF working with marginalized and disadvantaged communities in the areas of greatest vulnerability and endemic need. In these efforts, LWF/DWS co-operates within global networks that include ecumenical, governmental and non-governmental partners.
With field programs in 37 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin and Central America and Europe, LWF/DWS has a distinguished record of compassionate and professional response, and effective long-term development programs. Its efforts reach out to all who are in need without distinction of ethnicity, gender, religion, nationality or political conviction.
Since 1952, LWF has been an implementing partner with UNHCR. Also, LWF is a founder member of ACT International.
