No longer thirsty, Ndego gravity water system

The woman replied, "Sir, please give me a drink of that water! Then I won't get thirsty and have to come to this well again." John 4:15

One of the major problems that the people of Ndego settlement villages faced was water despite being close to a number of lakes. The water from the lake was anything but potable, people depended mainly on water they fetched from Swamps and rain water in an area where it seldom rains, this was more than a challenge.

An earlier gravity water system that was constructed during the rehabilitation period in 1996 could only serve Ndego sector one leaving out other four sectors. In June 2004, LWF/WS Rwanda through its IRD project in Kibungo commissioned the Ndego II gravity water system that will benefit more than thirty thousand people in this area. It is planned that a second phase of the Ndego II gravity water system will serve a similar number of people in reaching the entire Ndego settlement site.

Among other expected outcome is the reduction of widespread water borne diseases in this area. The availability of water also will mean time saving for other household activities and school for children most of whom have had to skip school to fetch water from long distances for their families. Rural water systems do not simply solve water problems but other problems too. Like the biblical Samaritan woman, the people of Ndego will not have to go back to the swamp again.
